Top Chef: The Finale

episode14thefinale

Well, we have a winner. And it’s certainly not who any of us expected. Cooking the best three course meal of your life without any guidelines can sometimes be more daunting than having guidelines and that led our fan favorite to falter and our egotistical predicted winner to become, well too egotistical.  I’ve complained about the outcome here, here and here, but now that I’ve sat down to write this blog, I think I have some different opinions. Here’s why…

Top Chef: ‘Super’ Frustrating

episode10topchefbowl1

It’s time for the Super Bowl and even Top Chef knows it! A clever “football squares”-themed quickfire and a head-to-head chef showdown  against past season contestants really brought out the sports in cooking. But I have a confession to make: I think I’m getting sucked into the drama of this show and not completely focusing on the food. I was incredibly frustrated about who wound up on the chopping block this episode because  I can’t stand most of the people who were safe from elimination.

Top Chef: Holiday Cheer

A holiday themed episode of Top Chef brings serves up a whole bunch of disappointing food for the judges but ultimately teamwork and holiday sportsmanship on the chefs’ part is rewarded. Not to mention, it couldn’t possibly be the holidays without Martha Stewart!

Top Chef: Bridal Blunder

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. This week chefs had to prepare food for a bridal shower of none other than their very own regular judge Gail Simmons (editor of Food and Wine magazine). First, let me start off by saying that in the previews, I just thought it was a bridal shower Gail was throwing! I didn’t realize it was for her (who is she marrying?) But now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I have to say that the winner of this challenge was hilariously shocking.

A Double Dose of Top Chef (Episodes 3 and 4)

Top Chef is really getting tough for the contestants. In this week’s episode, chefs not only had to test their cooking skills, but their teaching and performing skills as well. The elimination challenge consisted of preparing a dish for a 2 minute and 30 second cooking demo audition for the Today Show. And how appropriate for a challenge on TV personality to be preceded with a Quickfire with none other than TV personality Rocco DiSpirito.

Top Chef Watch: Crafty Contradictions

Playfully titled “Show Your Craft,” episode 2 was named for the elimination challenge where Tom Colicchio handed over the knives to his own restaurant: Craft (pictured above). But, one contestant’s attempt at being ‘crafty’ with an exotic ingredient backfires and sends [him/her] home. That’s irony number one. Another irony came from the hot dog quickfire challenge. Inspired by the $10,000,000 New Yorkers spend on hot dogs a year, this challenge paved the way for a non-New Yorker to triumph. But that’s not all the irony, read on for more…

Warning: Spoilers after the jump!
