November Monthly Mouthful

We had a lot of fun with this Monthly Mouthful! With the holiday season approaching, tasty pies like apple or pumpkin have a way of stealing our hearts and serenading our taste buds. From pecan to butternut squash, there are just so many kinds of pie that make their way onto the holiday table! But this year we were cruel and asked our favorite food bloggers: “If you had to limit yourself to eating just ONE kind of pie this holiday season, which would it be?

And no, this was not an easy question. Many bloggers had a hard time picking just one while other bloggers cheated in my opinion and merged two kind of pies into one ;) But overall, I think everyone was just thankful this was only the Monthly Mouthful and not real life! (Luckily you can still make as many pie recipes as you wish!)

Scroll down for the responses and our fancy “pie” chart! :)

Butternut Squash Pie

slicetakenout2

I know we’re a little pie crazy here at Chew on That but the bounty of the fall season just lends itself to great pie! From apples to pumpkins, just about any ingredient that’s popular in the fall can make a great pie or tart. But one vegetable that sometimes gets overlooked in the way of pie is butternut squash pie.  Shoved aside by the popularity of other pies, I forgot just how great butternut squash pie can be. It’s a good thing my friend served this at a dinner she invited me to or else I’d still be living without this great pie.

As Easy As Apple Pie

applepie1

Over the weekend I made an apple pie that was not only easy but delicious too. Growing up,  I was never a big apple pie fan. In fact, it wasn’t until recently that apple pie even appealed to me. There is something to be said about  homemade apple pie with homemade filling. The freshness preserves the texture and the taste making a much better pie if you ask me.

Do You Make Your Own Pie Crust?

foolproof-pie-shell

Now that fall is in full swing, I have a lot of pies on my “to-bake” list. I keep dreaming of homemade apple pies, dreamy butternut squash pies and a batch of those luscious pumpkin pies we all go nuts for. But one thing I can’t decide is whether or not to make my own crust or stick with the storebought kind to ease my troubles? The pie crust recipes aren’t the issue (find some pie crust recipes after the jump) - I just wonder if the labor will pay off.

Readers, help me out! Tell me in the comments: Do you make your own pie crust or do you buy? Is it better to make your own when you have lots of pies to bake? What pie crust recipe do you use? What brand of pie crust do you buy if you do buy?

Pumpkin Pie Tarts with Dark Chocolate Frosting

I haven’t made many pies before (in fact the last pie I made was on “Pi Day”), but as soon as I saw these pie pumpkins on sale at the grocery store, I knew I’d be making pumpkin pie this fall season in some way, shape or form. But I didn’t want just any pumpkin pie, I wanted something different - a deviation from the old yawn of a classic we all serve at our Thanksgiving tables. I wanted tarts. With chocolate on them.

If you had to pick your favorite pie, what would it be? I know, it’s a hard question! I happen to love lemon meringue pies, apple pies, french silk pies…I really can’t limit myself to just one.
