Traditional Wedding Foods

wedding-food

It’s summertime and everyone I know is getting married!  I’ve gotten completely swept up in all of the wedding madness, and I started wondering what traditional wedding recipes existed in the world.  Besides cake, of course, do different cultures have different foods at their weddings?

Smarter Lunch Ideas

sandwich-blog

When you’re on a tight budget, it can be difficult to come up with new, fun and tasty meals for lunch at the office. I know I’d much rather go out and eat every day, but not only is that not practical since I’m unfamiliar with the area, but it’s also expensive. Usually, I just stick with packing a sandwich, some raw vegetables and a fruit salad.

It’s easy for me to make in the morning and it’s moderately healthy. But it’s so, so boring! I’m getting to the point that I’m dreading that lunch. I’ve been trying to come up with some new alternatives to the common lunch and here is what I’ve discovered.

Lovin’ the Soupbox

soupbox1

Every Tuesday morning, I’m stuck driving into downtown Chicago, attending three back-to-back classes at Loyola University Chicago, hanging around and doing homework for about an hour and then going to a meeting. It’s a long day, to the say the least. Although I usually pack a light lunch to get me through that second class, during my break between classes and my meeting, I always make sure to head down the block to the wonderful little restaurant, the Soupbox.

Boston’s Chowderfest!

chowderfestsign

I had the pleasure of visiting Boston over the 4th of July weekend. And aside from being blown away by the Boston Pops/Neil Diamond Fireworks Spectacular show Saturday night, I participated in another Boston Harborfest weekend tradition called: Chowderfest. Famous for their  New England Clam Chowder, Boston hosts this local competition on the Sunday of July 4th weekend every year. This year, eight local chowdermakers brought their best pots of New England Clam Chowder to hand out samples to locals and tourists alike. Why do they do it? To compete for a chance at the Chowderfest Hall of Fame, of course!

Soup for the Birthday Blues

Oh I know what you must be thinking. Soup? in the summer? But why?

And to that, dear readers, all I can say is things don’t always happen as planned…

For example, I was planning on sharing a birthday cake with you today. No, scratch that, I wanted to make birthday creme brulee (my specialty). But, when you get sick on your birthday, like fever-laden, cold-ridden, tied-to-your bed sick, it’s a little hard to think about cake…or even creme brulee, even if it is your birthday.

Yes, sadly, on my birthday, all I could think about was soup. And when you’re drowning in a metaphorical bowl of self pity, you might as well top it off with a real bowl of soup. And hey, soup is supposed to make you get better, right?

So if any of you feel struck with the sick plague this summer, let there be plenty of soup recipes to go around. Even if it is summer.

If Spring Isn’t Here Yet, I’m Going To Keep Cooking Winter Food

Bowls of Ribollita

This post is my protest to Mother Nature. As Hillary mentioned last week, the first day of Spring in Chicago came and went without so much as a break in the cold temperatures or a pause in the snow. We’re still quite cold and dreary here. And even though our loyal Cub’s fans are willing to pretend it’s baseball weather, I don’t think I’ll be in that mentality until I see some sunshine.
