Congratulations to the Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks. While I’m a little disappointed that I’ll be missing the awesome parade that will take place downtown tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. I’m happy that I’ll get the chance to congratulate this fabulous team whose players worked so hard, one of which lost seven teeth! Again, you might be puzzled over the connection to food, but it’s there alright. There was a little wager going on between Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and Philadelpha Mayor Michael A. Nutter.

I’ve never eaten any type of organic food, dish or meal. My mom never bought any organic food for the family when I was a kid, and it’s still too expensive for me to purchase now. I always thought that I was missing out on some nutrition-related health benefits. A new study concluded it might be OK that I’ve been on an organic-free diet my entire life.
According to an article on Reuters, there isn’t any evidence that organic foods benefit your health! That’s great news for me, and not so great news for individuals who have been breaking the bank by buying expensive organic foods believing that they’re in for some miracle health advantages.

While I visited Green City Market last fall , I had yet to reap the benefits of their summer produce until this past weekend. And with purple rain carrots (pictured above) to squash blossoms to tables of fresh herbs to the best raspberries I have ever tasted, there was certainly a lot to see (and taste). I wish I lived closer to the market so I’d be able to pick up this awesome produce every weekend but regardless, I’ll definitely make an effort to go back more regularly. I definitely need more of those raspberries.

It’s clear that both Maxine and I love farmer’s markets. There’s something about that fresh hand-picked produce that has been locally grown, and these days buying local is more important than ever. That’s why it’s somewhat ironic that we have written about Madison’s Farmer’s Market, Seattle’s Pike Place Market and even Montreal’s Atwater Market, but we have yet to write about our own very famous market right here in Chicago: the Green City Market. And since Alice Waters named it one of the top 10 markets in the U.S., it’s about time we did.
