Would You Try These Outrageous Food Challenges?
I feel like I’ve gained ten pounds by just looking at pictures of these food challenges. And yet, though my arteries give out an imaginary cry, I’m tempted to give them a try.
Pho Garden Challenge

Place: Pho Garden — San Francisco, Calif.
Even for a pho lover like me, this challenge seems nearly impossible. In one hour, you must finish one gigantic bowl of pho that contains 2 pounds of noodles and 2 pounds of beef with a never-ending amount of broth. Eat the entire dish and become a Pho Garden Champion on their wall of fame. The meal costs $22, but if you succeed, it’s on the house.

Don’t be fooled — this pizza weighs 11 pounds and has a diameter of 30 inches. Unlike the other challenges, you are allowed to have a partner to finish this gargantuan pizza. I think it’d be a crime not to. It costs $50 to enter, but if you succeed, you and your partner are awarded $250.
The Inferno Bowl Challenge

Place: Nitally’s Thaimex Cuisine — St. Petersburg, Fla.
For this challenge, you win $1000. So what’s the challenge? Finish a 48-ounce soup made from bhut jolokia (ghost chili), which is one of the spiciest peppers in the world. This soup is so spicy (hence the name) that there are several rules before entering the contest: you must be at least 18 years of age to compete, be sound of mind and healthy, be sober and must stay at your seat during the entire “purge.” Now that’s a frightening word.
The Kitchen Sink Challenge

Place: The San Francisco Creamery Co. — Walnut Creek, Calif.
I remember watching one episode of Man vs. Food where Adam Richmond took on a milkshake challenge and it made me a bit queasy. Now this challenge isn’t about milkshakes, but ice cream — and lots of it. This humongous sundae is served in their specially made sink and contains 3 sliced bananas, 8 scoops of ice cream (of your choosing), 8 toppings, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry on top. Finish the sundae in less than an hour and you win a year’s worth of ice cream. But I don’t know if you’d ever want to see (let alone eat) ice cream ever again after completing this challenge.
