Brookside Chocolates: A Healthier Sweet Treat
Have you ever wondered when they were going to discover a good-for-you treat that actually tastes as good as they say it would? Me too, and I think I have found it in these Brookside dark chocolate covered fruit juices.
If you saw the word dark chocolate and instantly went “yuck!” hold that thought.
These delectable chocolates do not have the traditional dark chocolate bitter aftertaste. Instead, they are surprisingly sweet, most likely due to the packed punch of fruit inside each little taste of heaven. Trust me you will find yourself popping them in your mouth like crazy in no time.
They have several flavors of fruit in the chocolates including: dark chocolate acai with blueberry, dark chocolate pomegranate and dark chocolate goji with raspberry.
I first discovered this incredibly sweet treat when acai (my favorite flavor of these chocolates) became top nutritional news after it was featured on Oprah a while back. The acai berry is a super fruit that is a natural source of energy. The little Brazilian berries are also chock full of antioxidants to combat aging and provide other benefits.
I next tried the pomegranate chocolates and fell in love once more. Pomegranate is another fruit full of antioxidants, which are fantastic for your body.
I most recently tried the new goji berry with raspberry chocolates. Just when I thought they couldn’t get any better, I was wrong. These new chocolates are perfectly sweet and tart. Goji berries, also called wolfberries, are another super fruit rich in antioxidants and Vitamin A.
Even the dark chocolate that covers these super fruit berries is full of body benefits. Dark chocolate in moderation aids vascular health with something called “flavanols”. Cocoa (the building block of chocolate) gives dark chocolate its bitter aftertaste because it is far less processed than traditional more sweetened milk chocolates. The more bitter it tastes, the more cocoa it has and the more beneficial flavanols can be found.
I also love that these chocolates are so easy to throw in a plastic bag and take with you for a pick-me-up snack during the day. They make a great addition to ice creams and other summer treats. They may be a little on the pricey side at $8.86 for a 32oz. bag at Costco, but I believe that they are worth it! Finally, a guiltless way to enjoy your chocolate – in moderation of course.
