With the hot summer days coming on, we all need a frozen treat now and then. And in the summer, we have so many choices when it comes down to dessert! But before you dive in to your freezer looking for some relief from the heat, get to know your options. Ice cream has a contender for most popular frozen dessert this summer!

Most of us have tried both ice cream and frozen yogurt and experienced the difference in taste and texture. And since the dawn of TCBY some 30 years ago, we’ve probably all heard that frozen yogurt is the healthy alternative to ice cream. But few of us know the real nutritional differences between the yogurt and cream that form the base of these two popular desserts. According to Livestrong.com, here are the big ones.

Fat: For a frozen dessert to qualify as ‘ice cream,’ it must contain at least 10 percent milk fat. In general, a ½ C. serving of commercial ice cream has 6 to 16 grams of fat. The premium ice cream brands have 17 to 24 grams of fat per ½ C. serving. Compare that to premium brands of frozen yogurt with only 4 to 9 grams of fat in the same serving!

Calories: Regular ice cream runs between 130 and 190 calories per ½ C. For the same size serving of FroYo, the range is 70 to 140 calories.

Bacteria: Okay, trust me here. Before you think ew and swear off yogurt forever, keep in mind that bacteria have gotten a bad rap for years. The millions of bacteria that live in our gut are actually essential to digesting the food we eat every day! To give your body a boost, look for the label ‘live bacterial cultures’ on your FroYo brands.

But for me, what really seals the deal for FroYo over ice cream is how easy it is to make frozen yogurt at home in your own kitchen! Whether it’s the Tangy Apricot Frozen Yogurt Dessert or a copycat of the popular Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt chain, these recipes are fun, delicious and easy to make. And don’t stop there! Yogurt is delicious in all sorts of dishes. Make your own Ambrosia for a party this summer, some Orange-Yogurt Muffins for a scrumptious breakfast, or a Fresh Fruit Yogurt Sunday for a snack on a summer afternoon.

Just remember to choose your toppings wisely! Even if you pick frozen yogurt for its health benefits, common toppings like chocolate sauce, marshmallows or cookie crumbles can send the calories through the roof!
