Surviving As A Fast-Food Loving Vegetarian

As you may or may not know, I am going vegan for Recipe4Living, and am currently on the vegetarian phase of the transition. I’ll admit, there are times when I want to just give up and have an Italian beef sandwich (with extra giardiniera) or roast up a chicken and some vegetables, but so far I’ve stayed strong.

I owe a huge part of my success thus far to fast-food. That’s right, there is such a thing as vegetarian fast food. I’m sure I’ll have a harder time finding vegan fast food options, but I’ll handle that hurdle when I get to it. Keep reading to find some of the fast food options that have kept me sane during my switch to vegetarianism!

I think what has helped the most in keeping me sane is pizza. Come on, who doesn’t love bread, marinara sauce, some cheese, and veggies? Well, I guess vegans don’t. But I’m not there yet, so I don’t have to worry. It will be a cold day in hell when I give up deep-dish Chicago style pizza once and for all (although  I will for the three months I’m totally vegan), and right now that type of pizza is keeping me from clawing out my eyes.

The second fast-food item that’s keeping me sane is the quintessential veggie burger. Most sit-down restaurants have a variant of it on their menu, but today I found out that Burger King has a veggie burger! What?! The King of beef has a veggie burger! Take that, McDonald’s! Anyway, being the good food editor that I am, I tried it. I think what the expression to describe how I felt when I tried it was “DAAAAAYUUUUM” although that might be spelled wrong. It was absolutely fantastic, and only 410 calories WITH mayo and ketchup. That made me feel less guilty for getting a large fry to go with it.

The third and final fast food item that is keeping me from breaking down and eating the entire deli section of my supermarket is Chipotle. That’s right, those burritos have got to have some type of sleep-aid in them, because every time I have one I’m ready for a nap. Plus, a burrito or burrito bowl can be even made vegan.  They’re chock full of things that are good for me, like beans, guacamole, brown rice, and sauteed peppers and onions, but it tastes so fat. If anything can be healthy and still taste fat, I’m in.

Please, feel free to chime in below and let me know if there are any vegetarian/vegan fast food options you think I should try!
