On my balcony, I made a 3′ x 3′ box garden, so I have 9 square feet of gardening space. While that doesn’t seem like much, I’m capitalizing on this space and making as much use of it as I can.
With the back three square feet, I have a trellis that I use for vines stretching across it. I planted a few vines of each yellow squash, cucumbers, and cantaloupe in these squares.
In the front three squares, I have two pepper plants (habañero and jalapeño) and a little strawberry patch. In the middle three squares, I’ll be growing a big tomato plant variety such as beefsteak.
Here are some tips I have for you gardeners. If you have a lot of space, then feel free to grow lots of vines and large plants. Zucchini, watermelons, and pumpkins are usually off-limits to those without much space, so you’ll have some unique produce if you think big!
If you have a small amount of room, use the vertical space as well as horizontal space. Make sure your vines grow up on trellises instead of across. Utilize new hanging bags for growing tomatoes and strawberries, they really work! And really consider what crops you will use the most when planting. I know I love to make salsa, so I grew the tomatoes and peppers I need for salsa. I will also need onions, but knowing how much space they use prevented me from planting them.
In general, make sure your garden has sun for at least 6 hours a day, your beds have drainage, and that you let them dry out before watering. In the summer months, water once a day until well soaked.
