Happy Fat Tuesday: Enjoy Mardi Gras Today!

Happy Fat Tuesday! Today is the day to indulge and enjoy food; no need to feel guilty today! Keep reading for recipes and history of this special foodie day. More after the jump, revelers!

Mardi Gras refers to the celebratory events of Carnival (Carnivale to some). ‘Mardi Gras’ is French for Fat Tuesday, when fatty foods rule before the fasting of the Lenten season. New Orleans is the place to be today (I have a few lucky friends there right now!), and the day is celebrated in South America with parades full of people donning traditional masks and costumes made of feathers and beads.

What are some of the ways you can celebrate with food today?

Mardi Gras Meatballs: This meatball recipe is not only easy but delicious; it’s always the first to go at any party!

New Orleans Peel and Eat Shrimp: These are addictive little buggers. Serve them with baguettes and lemon wedges.

Avocado-Studded Mardi Gras Fritters with Creole Mustard-Apricot Sauce
: This very southern dish is perfect to serve at your Mardi Gras celebration! Creamy and rich with a kick of spicy Creole mustard, this is a fun dish that’s deliciously different.

Cornbread Cake: This isn’t quite a cake and it isn’t quite a bread, either. Either way, it tastes terrific with Southwestern-style dishes.

Mardi Gras Madness Punch
: Easy, tasty, and packs a good punch–perfect for celebrating Fat Tuesday, no?

How to Make a King Cake for Mardi Gras: No Mardi Gras party is complete without a celebratory king cake! This traditional cake has a cream cheese filling and a lemon glaze. It’s adorned with brightly colored sprinkle, and the best part is that a tiny plastic baby is baked into the bread and will bring good luck to whoever finds it.

If you plan on hosting a last-minute shindig tonight, here is all the info you need to host a Mardi Gras party at YOUR place!
