Cooking with Coca-Cola®: Recipes and A Super-Cool History Lesson
Good morning, readers! I don’t know about you, but I have a soft spot for Coca-Cola. We all occasionally need a sugar fix, and in my case, I prefer a can of pop to a hard sugary candy or a piece of chocolate. Soda over ice is always the ideal choice, but have you ever thought about cooking with soda pop? Keep reading for some history on the iconic Coca-Cola brand and awesome ideas for turning Coke fizz into recipe gold!
The Coca-Cola brand has been around since 1886; I think it’s fun to imagine the high society of the Mid-Victorian age sipping on this newfangled beverage treat. Here are some interesting facts about the company and the famous soda pop:
Coca-Cola was invented by Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta. The brand name was provided by the doctor’s bookkeeper; he also scripted the flowing Coca-Cola logo that is so recognizable and iconic today.
In 1887, Asa Candler bought the formula for Coca-Cola from Pemberton for under $2,500. By 1897, Coca-Cola was heavily-marketed and quickly became one of the most popular fountain drinks in the states.
Until 1905, Coke contained extracts of cocaine as well as kola nut (very high in caffeine).
