Cookbook Reviews: Sweet Invention, Cook Like A Rock Star- You Can Win! -ENDED

Whether it’s rocking out or keeping sweet, our reviews allow you to learn the history of dessert in the aptly-named Sweet Invention: A History of Dessert by Michael Krondl and delve into the culinary secrets of chef Anne Burrell in her book Cook like a Rock Star. Anne Burrell’s book, with a forward by Mario Batalli, is dedicated to her mother. She credits her mom as ‘the original free spirit’ and anyone who has seen Anne cook (Secrets of a Restaurant Chef)  knows what a free spirit she herself is! Her book includes a list of her favorite tools and pantry staples along with tricks she’s learned along the way. Her handwritten notes give the book a personal touch, like notes in the margin of a grandma’s much-loved and well-used cookbook. Whether it’s a seasonal beet and herb salad or a zesty sea scallop, Anne takes it on with equal fervor in her 125  (‘rustic, yet elegant’) recipes, which are are vibrant and reflect the idea that chefs are ‘the new rock stars’! I personally can’t wait to try the risotto with rock shrimp.

Who is the book for? Foodies, gourmands and casual eater alike. There is something for everyone, from newbies to kitchen masters.

In his book Sweet Invention: A History of Dessert, Michael Krondl, author and award-winning cooking instructor, provides a world tour of dessert throughout the ages. Each chapter begins with a travelogue of shorts (one chapter entitled ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ is about- where else?- France). Along with well-researched history, Krondl also provides readers with a recipe that represents the region- in this case, a Gâteau Saint-Honore a l’orange, a delightful French pastry. Krondl also explores food traditions and assumptions, such as the American love of ice cream and the correlation between sex and chocolate.  We are provided with a look into Krondl’s travels along with a look into the history of our favorite dessert items.

Who is the book for? This dessert book is terrific for those who love sweets, travel and learning about food origins.
