Food in the News: The Mobile Restaurant

Delivery options have existed for years, but the next frontier in lunching is the food truck. What is a food truck, you ask?

Now rising in popularity in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., these portable kitchens-on-wheels are becoming more and more popular as 2011 progresses- even brides are hiring these mobile catering stations as a gift to her guests for a late night snack post-reception! With a variety of cuisines ranging from cheap eats (hot dogs and tacos) to desserts (delectable cupcakes!) to new interpretations of old favorites (gourmet ingredient mac and cheese, crab cake sandwiches), these trucks have something for everyone, no matter what you are craving- and you rarely have to venture further than your office building front door to find them

Here are the top 3 reasons to tackle this trend.

Variety. It is the spice of life, after all. Whether you are craving a duck sandwich, a Mexican fish taco or a sweet sampling of desserts, there is a truck for your needs. If you join your co-workers at a local burger place, your options are limited. If your tastes venture beyond fast food, there is no reason not to try your luck with one of these gourmet meals on wheels!

Convenience. If you are planning on grabbing a bite to go, by all means. Take the elevator down to the front doors and take your purchase back to your office or to a local park bench and enjoy the summer weather. You don’t have to worry about walking or driving to a local lunch spot (precious lunch minutes saved!) and you also save on those astronomical delivery fees.

Social scene. Most of these trucks operate on the basis that you are ‘Following’ them on Twitter or ‘Liking’ them on Facebook. They gravitate to where the office drones spend their days. If you choose not to engage with social media, no worries. If you work downtown, chances are that you’ve already seen them pull up in front of your office. Depending on the popularity of the food truck, there is sometimes a short line. It is a great way to socialize on your lunch break.

The food truck is like having a food festival in your neighborhood every day of the week! Whether you are a solo act or a social butterfly, you can spread your wings a bit on both counts and see what your local trucks have to offer. Who knows? Maybe your next special event will be hosted by a food truck, saving you prep, cleaning time and plastic cutlery!

I love food trucks! I grew up with them in Mexico City and they’re some of the best places to eat in the city. I was so glad to see them popping up in the US everywhere. I should open my own when I get back there, hehe.
