Wacky Wednesday: Deep-Fried Fair Food!
It is on trend to push the limits in the food world these days. Each restaurant, chain and individual chef wants to stir the pot of controversy, thus giving us a wacky and weird sampling of everything odd, quirky and, yes…even endearing. Here are ways to experience these trends at local and state fairs!
Over the years, state fairs and festivals have been dedicating a lot of time to deep-frying everything from Twinkies to butter (yes, butter). The Orange County Fair will have an even wider selection- they have included deep-fried Girl Scout cookies and deep-fried Kool-Aid balls on their menu thanks to a wacky fair mainstay called Chicken Charlie’s.
You can still get your standard Lemon Shake-up (lemonade and sugar shaken vigorously and then flipped) at most fairs, but stranger and stranger options are popping up. You can now get fried spaghetti and meatballs on a stick at the Minnesota State Fair (not like momma makes it!) and a Hot Beef Sundae in Iowa (not what you’re thinking- it looks like a sundae but is compromised of roast beef, mashed potatoes subbing for vanilla ice cream and a cherry tomato on top). Don’t forget the grated cheese (or sprinkles, as it were).
The California State Fair is the place to go if you are hankering for fried frog legs or a Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich (it is exactly what it sounds like- two greasy donuts instead of a bun). Consider bringing gallons of water to wash this all down- and don’t even think about going on any of the fair’s amusement park rides!
Do YOU have any weird food habits or recipes? Let us know in the comments! In the meantime, try this recipe out! It isn’t quite as weird and wacky as the others mentioned, but maybe that is a good thing…
