Egg Nog: Yay or Nay?
The holiday season has got me thinking about some of the most debated foods and drinks. Fruitcake is way up there- many people think that receiving a fruitcake is the worst insult ever, while others (my dad included) love the stuff! I think, however, that the most debated holiday food is egg nog. You either love it or hate it, and most often people hate it. Read about what we at Chew on That think of this interesting drink after the jump!
Personally, I like egg nog. I tried it for the first time a few years ago and expected to hate it, but when I tasted it, I was surprised. I really enjoyed the combination of holiday flavors and the thick consistency. And with a little booze added in, it was a nice, warming Christmas cocktail.
The one thing I hate about egg nog, though, is the name. The word “nog” just makes me ill- I hate the sound of it. I did some research to find out what exactly it meant, and apparently a “noggin” is a Middle English word for a wooden mug in which alcohol was served. Even though there is a pretty good explanation, I still hate that word. And combining it with the word “egg” doesn’t help…gross.
I wanted to see what other people thought about egg nog, so I asked the other Chew on That editors what their opinions were:
Allison: “Icky. I don’t like egg nog because it’s too thick. It doesn’t taste like any flavor I can recognize; it has it’s own distinct flavor and I hate it.
Sophia: “I don’t like egg nog because it’s thick and reminds me of pudding, and I don’ t like pudding. I just don’t think eggs should be in a drink.”
What do you think about egg nog? Do you guzzle the stuff down each holiday season or do you avoid it like the plague? Leave a comment and let me know if you think it’s detestable or delectable!
