The Strangest Foods I’ve Ever Eaten

I have eaten a lot of strange foods in my day.  I pride myself on being daring when it comes to food and I’m always on the lookout for new, exciting, and yes- repulsive- things to sample.  Read about 5 of the weirdest things I’ve ever tried after the jump!

1. Baked Crickets and Chocolate-Covered Ants

Ever since I read the book How to Eat Fried Worms when I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to try eating a bug, just to say that I had done it.  So, a few Christmases ago, I decided I was going to make it happen.  I put “edible bugs” on my X-mas list and opened my stocking to find two little packets.  One had baked crickets inside and one had chocolate-covered ants.  The chocolate-covered ants tasted really smoky and not like chocolate at all! I hated them!  And the crickets tasted fine…after you got past the fact that you were eating little legs and eyeballs…

2. Deep-Fried Snickers Bar
I used to live in Scotland, just down the street for a little chip shop that would deep-fry anything.  People would always leave holding deep-fried candy bars and I vowed to myself that before I left the UK, I had to try one.   After my heart started beating again, I really enjoyed it!  It was crunchy on the outside and melty on the inside.  Too bad I can never have one again (unless I want to risk death by chocolate- for real!)

3. Ostrich Steak
Strangely, I found myself eating this in Door County, Wisconsin, where you’d never suspect to eat an ostrich.  It was really nice and rich.  Definitely yummy.

4. A Mashed Potato Stuffed Chocolate Cupcake
Tried this at the Taste of Chicago this past summer.  See photos and read all about that here.

5. Chicken Feet (see photo above)
Tried these in Chinatown in New York City.  They were completely different than I thought they would be.  I thought they would be hard and tough, but they were soft and chewy.  They had a great flavor to them, actually!  You just have to watch out for those little foot bones!  (ew.)

There are definitely more weird foods that I’ve had in my life so far, so there will probably be a “Part 2″ when I think of them.  Stay tuned!

Now it’s time for you to tell me!  What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever tried?

Haha! Cultures are so interesting. Chicken feet are really common over here in asia. =) Hmmm the strangest food I’ve ever eaten has to be green tea bubble tea with cheese and salt. That was an interesting mix of flavor…

Chicken feet…not so strange in Vancouver, as you get it all the time with dim sum. However, “stinky tofu” (a Taiwanese specialty) is disgustingly strange. I have no idea why people want to eat something that smells like feet!?

I’d have to say that chicken feet ranks high on my “strangest food I’ve ever eaten” list. Can’t say I’m jumping for a chance to eat them again, either!
