Happy Columbus Day!
It’s hard to forget the rhyme many of used to remember the year Columbus came to America: “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Columbus Day is celebrated by many North and South American countries as the anniversary of Christopher Columbus‘s arrival in the Americas. Although it wasn’t made a federal holiday until 1970, we can all agree that Columbus Day was a momentous occasion for America.
Christopher Columbus was Italian, but he sailed to America for Spain. The King and Queen were the only ones willing to finance his expedition. However, his nationality has caused Italian-Americans to claim the holiday as their own and celebrate with parades and tons of delicous Italian food. Here’s a sample menu:
