Food in the News: Pumpkin Beer, Gelato University and the Sparkling Water Fountain of Paris
Pumpkin Beer! – We can’t resist pumpkin here at Chew on That. As the weather starts to change and the leaves begin to fall, it’s time to purchase our first pumpkin of the year. But pumpkin beer is a whole different story. Unfortunately, none of the Chew on That editors have tried this fall beverage, but this article fascinated us nonetheless. Sparkling Water Fountain – In an attempt to help persuade the French to purchase and drink less bottled eater from the store, a new public drinking fountain spurting still and fizzy water opened in Paris. The water comes from the public supply. It’s then chilled and infused with bubbles. Even though I have no interest in going to France, I’d love to try this fountain. Maybe they’ll do something similar in the U.S.
Gelato University – The Chicago Tribune has tons of photos of Carpigiani Gelato University. The school is located outside of Bologna, Italy. It’s trying to uphold the tradition of gelato. Students partake in classroom work and hands-on instruction. This is a pretty cool idea, but it seems too specific. I’d think that they’d want to expand it to all Italian desserts, but I guess if it works, it works!
Designer Milk – According to Chow, milk is becoming an “it” food. There’s a milk bar in New York City. One company has served a big snowball of frozen milk filled with honey last summer. Other companies have begun selling evaporated milk ice cream and milk–flavored soft serve. Read more about milk’s sudden transformation into this ultra-popular drink/food here!
KFC Sinks to a New Low – KFC is trying to promote its Double Down sandwich by using college girls sporting KFC Double Down sweatpants. Apparently, this will help encourage students to try the sandwich. The girls receive $500, but I think the bottom line here is that KFC is trying to target college men, and is actually objectifying women in the process. Personally, I don’t eat anything from KFC, and I don’t intend to ever.
