Food in the News: The Hottest Pepper, Winning Wheat Bread and Egg Salmonella


The World’s Hottest Pepper – While I prefer mild bell peppers, I know quite a few individuals who absolutely love testing their limits with extra fiery peppers. Well, they better acquaint themselves with the Dorset naga, which was developed by Michael and Joy Michaud, owners of a British mail-order seed company. The pepper was tested at 1.6 million units by the University of Warwick. To put things in perspective, jalapenos range from 2,500 to 8,000.

Fast Food? Choose Wendy’s - In Zagat’s 2010 Fast Food Survey, Wendy’s ranked pretty high in nine different categories. Top honor included the impressive Top Food and Top Overall spots, among Mega Chains (more than 5,000 locations). It also earned second place for Healthy Options, Top Facilities, Top Service, Best Value Menu and Best Salads. Wendy’s finished in the top five for Best Fries and Best Hamburger. This fast food joint is by far my favorite, so go Wendy’s!

Smaller Melons – The New York Times ran a piece on the recent trend toward preferring small melons, as opposed to larger ones. Big melons are still popular for nostalgic reasons, but it seems like the smaller the melon, the easier it is to handle. Personally, I don’t care about the size of the melon, just as long as it’s juicy. What do you think?

Wheat Bread Over White – In July, 52-week dollar sales of packaged wheat bread surpassed those of white bread in the nation’s supermarkets for the first time ever, according to the Nielsen Company. Wow, that’s major news! I’ve been eating wheat bread for the past 3 years, but before then, it was always white. Maybe this will be a start to a new health trend? Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Egg Salmonella Outbreak – Dozens of brands that contained Iowa’s Wright County Egg eggs, were recalled last week, and it doesn’t look like the recall is over yet. More illness may be related to the outbreak. Brands in the Iowa recall include: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps.

    Good news about whole wheat bread! It’s so much better for you–glad people are figuring that out. IMHO, it tastes better, too!

    I think the salmonella issue is about producing eggs in factory settings instead of allowing the chickens to be raised in a healthy way. Maybe this will be a wake-up call!
