Cocktail Hour: Cosmopolitan

To celebrate the premiere of “Sex and the City 2″ (yes, I’m a bit behind), I decided to make a classic and extremely well-known cocktail.  It’s the cocktail for ladies everywhere.  It’s pink.  It’s pretty.  It’s yummy.  It’s a Cosmopolitan.

After searching on Recipe4Living, I found a great recipe for this classic martini.  Here it is:

Ingredients
* 4 Part(s) Skyy Vodka
* 2 Part(s) Cranberry Juice
* 1 Part(s) Lime Cordial
* 1 Part(s) Cointreau Orange Liqueur
* 1 Garnish Lemon Twist

As usual, I had to change things up a little bit, as my liquor cabinet is not as fully stocked as I would like it to be.  I didn’t have any Skyy brand vodka, so I used my Svedka vodka, instead.  I also didn’t have any lime cordial, so I used lime juice in its place.  And finally, I didn’t have a lemon twist to garnish it with, so my cocktail was naked.  (Oh, and a quick note- Cointreau is pretty much the exact same thing as Triple Sec- it is just a bit higher quality.  However, you can interchange them as you please.)

 Directions
Add all ingredients into a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into 2 well-chilled martini glasses. Garnish with a lemon twist.

As I was making only one cocktail, I halved the recipe and was on my way!  The resulting combination was the lightest pink Cosmo that I’ve ever seen, but then again, this is a different recipe from the one I’m used to.  It looked perfectly girly and delicious, though!

My first sip was a bit more sour than I expected.  It kind of had a grapefruity taste to it and I immediately knew why. Lime cordial is much more sugary than lime juice, which is very acidic and a bit tart.  The lime juice that I used in place of lime cordial was overpowering the drink a bit and making it more tart than sweet.

I personally did not enjoy this drink.  However, I had 3 other people taste it and they thought it was good.  Not great, but good.  I  supposed I’m a harsher critic than they are.  It was definitely drinkable, but it didn’t taste like a Cosmo, and that’s kind of the point.

I have all the confidence in the world in the recipe itself; I think I just screwed up by trying to substitute ingredients.  If you have all the right ingredients, I am sure this would be a delicious drink for girl’s nights or party.  Just don’t cut corners like I did or you’ll end up with a less-than-desirable drink.
