Cocktail Hour: Tootsie Roll

Today’s Cocktail Hour concoction left both myself and my two roommates speechless! This simple and somewhat strange sounding two-ingredient cocktail totally knocked us off our feet.  Read why you need to try a Tootsie Roll TONIGHT!

When I found this easy recipe on Recipe4Living, I was a little bit confused.  How could something orange-flavored and something coffee-flavored combine to taste like a Tootsie Roll? I couldn’t understand it, so I had to try it!

This recipe was as easy as can be.  Here’s what you need to make it:

* 3 parts orange juice
* 2 parts Kahlua

Yep, that’s it.  This recipe uses “parts” instead of ounces, and I knew that 5 ounces wouldn’t fit into my martini glass, so I made each “part” about 3/4 of an ounce.  This equated to about 2 1/4 oz. orange juice and 1 1/2 oz. Kahlua.

Just shake the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker with ice, strain, and pour into a martini glass.  The recipe said to garnish it with a real Tootsie Roll, which would definitely add something to the appearance, but I didn’t have one.  I think a chocolate curl would have worked nicely, as well.

My first visual impression of the drink wasn’t too great.  It was a sickening orangey-brown color that looked like…well, I won’t tell you what I thought it looked like.  But then I tasted it.

My reaction:  “Oh my God.”
Roommate #1′s reaction:  “Oh my God.”
Roommate #2′s reaction: “Oh my God.”

Those were definitely good “oh my Gods.”  It tasted amazing.  It wasn’t too sweet, it wasn’t too strong…it wasn’t too anything.  It was just really, really good.  It was so good that I even texted a friend about it!  I can’t describe the exact flavor.  It seemed to change fro

But here’s the question of the day: did it taste like a Tootsie Roll? The drink itself didn’t, but the aftertaste DEFINITELY did.  Very odd, but so good.

Unfortunately, the joy of the drink didn’t last too long, as it started to give me a stomach ache when I got halfway through.  It was probably all the sugar coupled with the citric acid in the orange juice.  But I still think that everybody should try this drink- just make yours a little smaller, perhaps.  It’s super easy, it’s soooo tasty, and it’s fun, too!  Next time I go to a cocktail party, I know which 2 ingredients I’ll be bringing!
