KFC Goes Pink?

breast-cancer-band

Okay, not to beat a dead horseradish or anything, but while roaming the web, I came across one of life’s little ironies…involving who else but Kentucky Fried Chicken!

In my last posting about the unveiling of the Double Down, I wrote about people’s reaction to this stand against the sandwich.  I also brought up the nutrition facts of the Double Down and the “healthier” grilled Double Down.

In a weird twist of fate,  it seems that KFC is now launching a huge campaign to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  In fact, this fast-food chain is attempting to raise 8.5 million dollars – which would be the single largest donation in the foundation’s history.

So how much are they giving?  They are donating 50 cents from every bucket of chicken through May 23, 2010. Yes, all their buckets are now a lovely shade of pink to help raise awareness about breast cancer.

According to Buckets for the Cure, they have currently raised $1,603,450.  Check out this YouTube video of a KFC literally going pink!

How strange is it that one of the unhealthiest fast-food chains is encouraging us to purchase buckets of greasy chicken to find a cure for breast cancer?  Don’t get me wrong.  I think it is great that a corporation is donating to such a wonderful cause, but it’s hard to see past the hypocrisy.  Not many people/corporations can raise this kind of money for a foundation, but it is unfortunate that the message of breast cancer awareness must be promoted through the consumption of unhealthy food.

I am not sure how to feel about KFC and breast cancer together, but I hope they reach their 8.5 million goal for the sake of everyone dealing with this disease in any way. I think that KFC needs to be crystal clear clear in their campaign that diets high in fat can increase chances of developing breast cancer.  After all, obesity is one of the biggest battles we currently face since it can lead to so many of the diseases and conditions we are working to eradicate.

KFC: BTW-Grilled Chicken by the bucket is now available and is a much healthier alternative to the fried stuff. Hopefully, in KFC’s attempt to raise money, people will make the healthier choice!

    Sher,

This is definitely a good thing! I was just looking at the nutrition facts for the grilled chicken. You’re right, it is much better. Surprisingly though, the chicken breast has more fat than the dark meat pieces of chicken.
