Cocktail Hour: Honeydew Martini

This week’s cocktail combines the flavors of juicy oranges, magnificent melons, and vodka.  Sounds great, right?  Unfortunately, this honeydew martini from Recipe4Living didn’t quite live up to expectations.  Read more and I’ll tell you why!

“This sounds delicious!” I thought to myself when I found the recipe on Recipe4Living.  And I had all the ingredients, too!  The honeydew martini was a shoo-in.  Here’s the recipe:

3 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. Midori
1/2 oz. triple sec

Shake ingredients together in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Strain and pour liquid into a martini glass.  Serve with lemon wedge or cherry.

I was so excited to taste this martini!  It sounded like such a wonderful combination of flavors and I loved the pale green color of the drink.  And what happened?

I took ONE SIP and dumped it down the drain.

Why?  It was so strong that my eyes actually started to tear up.  I have never had a real, honest-to-goodness martini; I have only had the girly, fruity, sugary kind.  I was fully expecting this to be a girly martini, but it definitely was not.

My first sip tasted as if I had just taken a shot of straight vodka.  There was no hint of orange from the triple sec.  There was no hint of melon from the Midori.  Even my vodka-soaked cherry didn’t leave a fruity flavor!

Perhaps the recipe itself should have set off some alarms in my head.  Three shots of vodka and only 1/2 shot of the other two ingredients?  I probably should have realized it would be a dangerous drink

I don’t want to say that this drink was a total bust.  I think if you changed around the measurements a bit, it could be pretty fantastic.  Next time, I might try 2 shots of vodka, 1 shot of Midori, and 1/2 shot of triple sec.  That way, the melon flavor would be more prominent and the splash of orange would stand out a bit more.

If you’re big on vodka, this is probably the drink for you.  But for those of you who can’t handle drinks that could strip paint off your walls, try switching up the proportions and you’ll have a much better beverage.
