Foodie Vocab #15: Bergamot
Every Friday at Chew on That, we test your foodie vocabulary by quizzing you on a new foodie word and supply delicious recipes to match!
This week’s word is: bergamot (noun).
Please choose the most appropriate answer. A bergamot is a type of:
a.) apple
b.) orange
c.) pear
d.) cheese

If you chose b.) orange, then you are correct!
A small yellow pear-shaped orange, the bergamot is from trees in the Mediterranean and its oil is used in many perfumes and beauty products (try Gentle Rain Body Mist or Lemon Clove Tooth Cleanser).
But it can also be used in foods. Try a Bergamot Vinaigrette over your salad or make a citrus marmalade to spread on toast. Many tea companies use the skin of the bergamot fruit to add flavor to their teas as well.
Bergamot can also refer to a perennial herb but this is more often called wild bergamot.
