Better Off With Any Other Name

After I found out that a New York baker was  selling chocolate cookies he called “drunken Negro heads,”  I thought long and hard about whether or not to blog about this disgusting story. You see, negative publicity is still publicity and with a racist cookie like this, I wouldn’t want to inadvertently  send anyone to this guy’s bakery. But, these cookies are such an over-the-top racist expression that I thought you should know they exist.

Video and interviews with this baker after the jump.

The Greenwich Village baker decided to make these chocolate pastries he likes to call “Drunken Negro Heads” in the wake of the inauguration of the first Black president. Unlike these Obama cookies, these chocolate creations make an obvious insulting stereotype. Many of the bakery’s patrons who were offered a “Drunken Negro Head” to go with their coffee were outright appalled.

This  news video from Fox News I saw on Hot Air says it all:

These chocolate cookies with maraschino cherry eyes, while odd, could have been accepted if they were referred to by any other name. They could have simply been seen as a silly face, made in chocolate because it’s a natural ingredient for a baker to use. But instead, the baker intentionally created this cookie with the name in mind. He used cherries to represent bloodshot eyes to indicate drunkenness, something he apparently  associates with Black people.

If you go to the Hot Air site and watch the second video, you’ll notice many New Yorkers were outraged and decided to boycott the bakery (good for them!)  It seems like it wasn’t until business went sour that the baker decided to issue an apology. So on the plus side, it doesn’t look like what seems like a pitiful publicity stunt worked out in this guy’s favor.

I’m not even going to bother posting this bakery’s address.

I don’t even know what to say. It’s hard to believe that someone would actually seriously do something like this. Wow.

Some people find a way even to spoil the most delicious part of life: Our food…

They are the same people with whom spoil the world peace, my dear. Some in the kitchen, some behind hidden doors…

It’s good to hear that New Yorkers are boycotting the baker. And that baker must be so brave or so silly to do such a thing in NY lol in one of the most cosmopolite metropoles in the world.

    Thanks for sharing, for awareness…

Hello, 2009! Geesh you’d think we were living in the 50′s with that attitude. I hope he swirls the drain quickly.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with that name. I’m pretty sure if it were white chocolate and called “drunken cracker heads” no one would care. Its 2009 get over it. You would be catching me eating that cookie everyday if it was a good cookie. How childish is it to boycott a cookie because of its name. Wow America!
