June Monthly Mouthful
Summer is the time when all those delicious berries come out from their hiding place. It’s a season where strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and my favorite: blackberries, put all other fruit to shame.
But would summer be the same if we didn’t have our oranges, lemons, limes, or grapefruits? Maybe not. Maybe berries don’t rule the roost in summer after all. But there’s only one way to find out…
Enter our favorite food bloggers! This month we asked:
“If you had to swear off one or the other for the entire summer, which would it be: berries or citrus?!”
See what they had to say after the jump!
Lydia from Perfect Pantry
Bye, bye, berries! Oh, I’d miss blackberry ice cream and banana-strawberry smoothies, but a summer without lemon and lime is unthinkable. Citrus brightens the flavor of both sweet and savory dishes, and I love to squeeze it on other fruits, like melons. One of my go-to desserts in summer is a hollowed out lemon (or lime) filled with lemon (or lime) sorbet, topped with some mint from my garden. I can’t imagine summer without it.

That’s easy: berries. Not that I don’t like berries, I do, but they are more frequently used in sweets or baking. Citrus fruits, on the other hand, are not only for baking, but are commonly used in cooking, at least by me. Lemons, limes and oranges for sure. And since I’m a cook and not at all a baker, the choice would be easy. I’d miss the berries though!
Joycelyn from Brownie Points
That’s an easy one! Living in the land of berries (Oregon) I’d swear off citrus. Don’t tell my grapefruit popsicles and orange Julius drinks I said that though! Oregon has a flood of berries in the summer -enough to keep us entertained all year around. My challenge this year is to sample as many blueberry (and strawberry, and boysenberry…) varieties as I can!

Oh it’s very unfair to make that choice. Berries are their seasonal best in the summer, and so to give them up would be a crime. At the same time, while citrus isn’t “in season” per se, it gives a much-needed “zing” to the berries in pies, crumbles, jams, and whatnot. If I run out of lemons at home, I feel that my fridge is somewhat incomplete without them. So having said all that, I refused to give up either as summer is made for fruits and berries. I will, however, gladly give up the butternut squash for the season ;-)

Ohhhhh! This is so hard! If it’s only for the summer, I would lay off the citrus but if I’m stuck on a boat, well then I’d get scurvy without some citrus but… then think about all the delicious summer berries I would be missing out on… but then I wouldn’t be able to wash down that beautiful strawberry shortcake with some homemade lemonade. I can’t decide! Could someone choose for me?
Ruth from Once Upon A Feast
Great question, at first I was going to go for giving up citrus – who doesn’t love fresh berries and they aren’t around long. But, then I thought about it for 5 seconds and realized…how could I do those lovely marinades like my cilantro citrus chicken or lamb or simply squirted over veggies, in vinaigrettes…..the list is endless.
Nicole from For the Love of Food
This is a really easy question for me to answer. I chose berries a million times over citrus for the summer! Mainly because, at least in Germany, citrus is a winter fruit and berries are a summer fruit. And, unlike citrus, berries can only be found in the late spring and summer in the markets, so I have to enjoy them as long as I can. Although, to be totally honest, I don’t know what I’d do without limes in the summer.
There are so many fresh salsas to make. But, I spend most of the year dreaming about blueberries, and raspberries, and wild strawberries…mm mm mm!

If I had to swear off berries or citrus for the entire summer it would have to be….
You see, we have a veritable forest of raspberry bushes on one side of our yard and another large patch of blackberries on the other side of the house. We’re not talking pints of berries, but POUNDS of the delicious stuff. So I spend most of the summer making berry cobbler, raspberry sorbets, or just eating berries by the handful. Boy do I love summer!

This is so hard! If I gave up berries there would be no strawberries and cream or frozen raspberry smoothies… But, Oh Citrus – how could I go all Summer without home made lemonade or a squeeze of lime in my Vodka and Soda? I want to ask for half the Summer with berries and the other half with citrus, but I’m sure I won’t be allowed. OK, here I go, I’m biting the bullet and choosing Citrus. But I’m making all the berries into jam for the Winter! :)
Bri from Figs with Bri
Oh! This is like choosing between beloved friends…or children, even! I am so torn! My first thought is that winter is citrus season, so maybe I’d swear off citrus. But then, in California, many things grow year round and I use, especially orange and lemon, practically every day in savory and sweet dishes. So it is a major flavor component in most of what I cook. So then I think, I guess I’d have to swear off berries. But that would include ALL berries…strawberries (in my strawberry lemonade), blackberries (over ice cream), blueberries (in my morning cereal), raspberries (with my yogurt)…I just don’t know. Well, it’s a good thing this is theoretical…
Sharon from Chocolate Chipped
Great (and very hard) question. If I rule out citrus, then that means I can’t have lemonade or sweet tea with a lemon twist–ouch! But, if I swear off berries then that means I can’t have my favorite strawberry glace pie with cream cheese. Doh!
Alright, since I have iced tea and other citrus infused beverages way more than strawberry pie, I will have to say that if I had swear off either citrus or berries that it would be…berries (gulp).
Bye-bye strawberry pie, but at least I get to keep my lemonade!
Whew–that was a tough decision!
Luisa from Wednesday Chef
Citrus! It’s not in season in the summer, but lovely, lovely berries are.
Jessie from Cakespy
Are you kidding me? I’d swear OFF citrus in favor of berries for the summer! Of course, I live in Seattle, and the Northwest has an abundance of gorgeous berries during the summer months. But really, I think that this preference is based on the fact that citrus fruits seem to travel better–where during the winter months you can still get pretty decent citrus, berries are just not the same outside of the summer months here!
Carol from Paris Breakfast
Berries or citrus? Impossible! I refuse to give up either one unless you put a lethal weapon to my head. Who can get through the summer without lemonaid or blueberry pie or blueberry sauce with lemon zest on vanilla ice cream. Is Vanilla ice cream also verbotten?

SAY! I LIKE LEMONS AND LIMES
I DO! I LIKE THEM, EVEN IN A RHYME
AND I WOULD EAT THEM IN A HURRY.
AND I WOULD EAT THEM IN GREEN CURRY…
CANDIED ON TOP OF BRIE. SITTING IN A MANGO TREE.
THEY ARE SO GOOD, SO GOOD, YOU SEE!
SO I WILL EAT THEM IN A JAM.
AND I WILL EAT THEM WITH SOME SPAM.
AND I WILL EAT THEM IN A BUN.
AND I WILL EAT THEM IN THE SUN.
AND I WILL EAT THEM, IN A TART.
AND IN THE DARK. AND UNTIL I – - – - .
AND I WILL EAT THEM HERE AND THERE.
SAY! I WILL EAT THEM ANYWHERE!
I DO SO LIKE LEMONS AND LIMES!
THEY ARE WELCOME IN THE STEAMYKITCHEN ANYTIME!
Amy from Nook and Pantry
That’s a tough question! Although I love citrus and cooking with it, lemons in particular, I don’t think I can ever swear off summer berries. I look forward to berry season all year long and have been known to devour a pound of strawberries in one sitting. There’s a small fruit stand near my house that sells the best strawberries (oh those ruby red berries taste like happiness and sunshine), raspberries, and blueberries and in late summer the blackberries in my backyard start ripening. You run into a few spiders here and there and get pricked pretty often but it’s sooo worth it. :)
