Grilling and “Chill”ing

Much like Maxine, I took part in my own grilling extravaganza recently. The minute the sun came out and it was bearable to be outside for more than 5 minutes, I took to our poor little grill that had just endured the harsh cold and snows of Chicago winter. After a 6-7 month hiatus, it was quite happy to be back on its feet again, but not as happy as I was to eat: grilled asparagus, grilled corn, grilled hot dogs, and grilled zucchini. YUM!

Now, this particular incident happened some two weeks ago (before Passover) and ironic as it isn’t, we’re back to cold temperature and even some SNOW! Looks like I’ll have to wait a few more weeks before the real grilling season begins. Argh Chicago.

But in the meantime, let’s relive the experience (and maybe all you fellow cold temperature-bearers can live vicariously).

Before heading over to the grill, you have to do some prep. But don’t worry, it’s not much. All we did was a little seasoning and scoring of the hot dogs, and we were ready to go.

Voila. Now it’s time to load it up. NOTE: I recognize that putting all the components on at once is not the best way to go about grilling. You should put the ingredients that take the longest on first and work your way to the smaller ones. In this case, i should have definitely started with corn and ended with asparagus. But I was hungry and impatient, so this is what happened. Deal with it :)

The first component to leave the grill was of course, the asparagus. Skinny and short, they took to the heat rather quickly.

Next, I’d say the hot dogs were ready. But, if you’re like me and my family, you keep them on as long as you can so you can get those delicious char marks…er…char casing? I like them really well done.

And eventually, our zucchini turned that lovely char color we all love. So out it came, now we’re just waiting on the corn.

After much anticipation, and hungry patience, we had some lovely corn:

    Same here, as soon as it got sunny and warm, I was outside grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, while the wife made some baked beans and pasta salad.

    Nothing beats a good a grill-out.

    I swear I just may have lost my mind. At least a couple of times in the winter on the coldest days, just to remind myself that warm weather is coming, I will make a bowl of potato salad and light the charcoal on the grill. And after bundling up a few times and making a mad dash out in the cold to check on the food, I am firmly convinced that I have gone totally mad. That is until the food is ready to come in and be eaten. Then I know it was worth it all.
