Who Cracked the Cheese?
This past weekend, Whole Foods set a Guinness World Record of the most wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese cracked around the world at the same time. Every single one of their stores participated in this event on Saturday, April 12th, importing at least one, if not multiple, 85-pound wheel of cheese from Parma and various Northwest regions of Italy.
See their video demonstration after the jump!
Before the event, Whole Foods conducted a preliminary cracking demonstration, using official cracking tools from Italy.
That looked like one of those magic tricks with the knives in all different places. Who knew there were 5 different tools necessary to crack open one wheel of one specific kind of cheese? I find it all very fascinating.
And while we’re on the topic of cheese and fascination, I’ve been meaning to recount my own fascination with excessively large pieces or packages of cheese. My brother pointed out to me last November that I have a habit of photographing big cheese. And as it turns out, all of the subjects of my photographs just happen to be some form or another of Parmesan! Let’s take a look…
This was from my “Biggest hunk of cheese I have ever seen” post, now an inaccurate title.
You may recall this photograph from the Fogo de Chao post, where I was endlessly impressed with the real Parmesan wheel in the middle of the salad bar.
This picture was taken at the Sixth Annual Duck Dinner where one of the guests brought in a piece of a real wheel of Parmesan cheese.
This $70 giant tub of shredded Parmesan cheese was found in a Seattle grocery store upon my visit.
Anyway, that’s all for my big cheese recap. Believe me I know it’s an odd habit to have. And if you have any photos of large cheese, feel free to send them my way! Perhaps we’ll do another roundup with other people’s cheese photos! :)
Back to the point, congratulations to Whole Foods for setting the first world record of most Parmigiano Reggiano cracked at the same time. I look forward to any attempt at topping that!
