“Excuse me, what’s your bowl of the day?”

I’m sure you’ve all heard, seen or tasted soup in bread bowls at some point in your lives. But before now, the genius behind recipes like Zesty Egg Salad Bowl, or Chili in a Biscuit Bowl have never really been brought to the forefronts of our public imagination.

Butt Foods (no joke!) has declared a revolution by kicking the fantastic world of bread bowls up a notch by adding flavors and even different shapes into the scheme. Yes, bread bowls now come in different flavors and you can read today’s Telegraph article that tells us all about it!

I imagine it won’t be long before Panera starts asking you which bread bowl you’d like with that Broccoli Cheddar soup – Sesame seed? Asiago cheese? There will be so many choices.

But in all seriousness (ok no, not really), now that we’re treating our soup-holding basins as flavored counterparts, rather than…er…soup-holding basins, we better be up on our flavor combinations before we’re critiqued for pairing our soups with the wrong bowl.

And when you think about it, does the bowl really have to be made out of bread? I’d like to challenge you all to reinvent the bowl in another form. Wouldn’t that really do a number on our soup contest! All soup and bowl recipes welcome!

And until this bread bowl revolution really kicks off, I’ll make do with sourdough.

Note: The picture above is of a Pumpkin Soup in a Sourdough Bread Bowl served with Shrimp from Maxie’s Cafe in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) of Amsterdam that my friend ordered. She wasn’t asked her bread bowl preference but I’m told the soup was pretty good!

This is going to sound crazy but I have always wanted to do a garlic bread bowl filled with spaghetti!

I admit that I have led a sheltered life & don’t get out much…never have ordered a soup in a bread bowl:( Question—does the average eater really eat the soup AND consume the entire bread bowl? Does the soup stay hot? btw–great post today!

Evil Chef Mom – what a genius idea! Go for it!!!

JEP – You should really try one…I admit, I have never finished the entire bread bowl but I do enjoy scraping up the sides and bottom that have soaked in my soup. It’s a wonderful experience :)

“we better be up on our flavor combinations before we’re critiqued for pairing our soups with the wrong bowl.”…I could really see that happening! It’s been ages since I had soup in a bread bowl and probably for that very reason so it might be fun playing around!

I think bread bowls are awesome. especially in san francisco, from one of the dozens of places to buy food right on the water at fisherman’s wharf. :) and ecm, that garlic bread/spaghetti idea sounds awesome! you should totally do that.

Minestrone soup in a garlic bread bowl. Italian Wedding Soup in a Parmasean Cheese bread bowl. Egg Drop Soup in a bowl of Brioche. Oh dear. Now you have gotten me started. I am going to sit in the corner and let my mind run amok! We have a Nor’easter coming and it is a good time to try my hand.

This is why America is so obese.

You are taking healthy soup and pouring it over bread! Think of the carbs in that!

    Not to mention the calories!

    What are you thinking?

This is why our government should tell us what to eat. Apparently some people can’t be trusted to know what is right and wrong

  • http://whatyourbowl ladyhawke

that what wrong the government take on to much.If people can’t think for them self oh well. and bread bowls I think people now it is not a think you would eat every day.

Tartelette – Let me know if you come up with anything good!

Melissa – I think they’re awesome too! Yay for whoever invented them.

Kwai – To each his own! I like noodles too, don’t get me wrong.

Iloveclinton – Meh. There are worse things that make us “obese”!

Ladyhawke – People should be able to make their own decisions, if they think a bread bowl is going to kill them, don’t eat them!
