“Excuse me, what’s your bowl of the day?”
I’m sure you’ve all heard, seen or tasted soup in bread bowls at some point in your lives. But before now, the genius behind recipes like Zesty Egg Salad Bowl, or Chili in a Biscuit Bowl have never really been brought to the forefronts of our public imagination.
Butt Foods (no joke!) has declared a revolution by kicking the fantastic world of bread bowls up a notch by adding flavors and even different shapes into the scheme. Yes, bread bowls now come in different flavors and you can read today’s Telegraph article that tells us all about it!
I imagine it won’t be long before Panera starts asking you which bread bowl you’d like with that Broccoli Cheddar soup – Sesame seed? Asiago cheese? There will be so many choices.
But in all seriousness (ok no, not really), now that we’re treating our soup-holding basins as flavored counterparts, rather than…er…soup-holding basins, we better be up on our flavor combinations before we’re critiqued for pairing our soups with the wrong bowl.
And when you think about it, does the bowl really have to be made out of bread? I’d like to challenge you all to reinvent the bowl in another form. Wouldn’t that really do a number on our soup contest! All soup and bowl recipes welcome!
And until this bread bowl revolution really kicks off, I’ll make do with sourdough.
Note: The picture above is of a Pumpkin Soup in a Sourdough Bread Bowl served with Shrimp from Maxie’s Cafe in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) of Amsterdam that my friend ordered. She wasn’t asked her bread bowl preference but I’m told the soup was pretty good!
