Craving Rice Pudding

I think I’m crazy, and somewhat psychic (no need to answer to that).

I’ve had a genuine craving for rice pudding all week and I have no idea where it came from. And the strange thing is, this has happened to me before. I have a history of sudden rice pudding cravings. It’s been awhile since my last one, but I’ve learned from past rice-laden goop desires (yea I made that sound really delicious, didn’t I?) that it really only takes about one bite to satisfy this craving.

So then it’s like, do I buy a whole container? The grocery store only sells large containers of rice pudding (from what I’ve seen) because somehow they think that if you want rice pudding, you want a whole tub of it.

I could make it myself. But do I really want to go through the effort for just one bite? Well, after seeing this recipe today on Pittsburgh Needs Eated, maybe. Rice pudding with dulce de leche? That must taste like heaven (for at least a bite).

And that’s where the psychic part comes in. I’ve been reading about rice pudding ALL over the food blogs and forums this week. Do others crave rice pudding too?! Weird.

-Hillary, hoping to somehow satisfy this craving this weekend

  1. I love rice pudding too, had some last week. I meant to make my own for the longest time, but the rice is still sitting in the package….

  3. Want to make a child happy and give happy memories? Rice pudding will do it. Even a bowl of leftover rice in the morning with warm milk and sugar. Great way to start the day.

  4. I agree. This pudding reminds me my grad mom’s food. Is the best example of comfort food

  5. It IS such a comfort food, and unfortunately I didn’t manage to satisfy my craving this weekend.

  6. Yum! I love rice pudding too. I rarely make it, but that should change. But, I totally relate to the psychic posts thing too. I can’t tell you how many times I think, “hey, I should post “x” dish and submit it to Tastespotting”, only to click on Tastespotting and find, like 3 other people with the same idea, and faster reflexes. Hmmm….well, maybe you just have to break down and make a batch of dulce de leche rice pudding. I’m sure you can find someone to share it with.

  7. Haha bri - so true! I guess all of us food bloggers just think alike! And you’re right, I will have to just make it :)

  8. I sure do! I LOVE rice pudding or tapioca puddings. It is something about the texture I think. I often make black sticky rice pudding with coconut milk. Have you heard about Rice to Riches in NY? They make and sell over 20 types of rice puds. Drool.

  9. How odd! I just had a craving for rice pudding as well! Last week I made a Cuban style rice pudding (or arroz con leche, if you want to get all fancy about it) with lime zest, cinnamon, clove, and a touch of vanilla. I kinda ad libbed the recipe so it could have come out creamier, but it did satisfy the craving! Food bloggers really do think alike. Creepy.

  11. Rice pudding,,,,heavenly !!!. I have one with a brittle topping that hardens,
then and you crack it with a spoon. It’s from the Coach House Restaurant in New York.
I’d love that black sticky rice pudding recipe with cocoanut milk that Anna mentioned too.

  12. I didn’t realize it until I read your blog, but rice pudding is exactly what I’ve been craving. I get sometimes vague cravings and can’t quite put my finger on it. Thanks for helping me name this craving. I’ll be having rice pudding by tomorrow.

  13. I’ve never heard of black sticky rice–would someone please share?

  14. I find that the best & easiest rice pudding is one I made up one day to satify my craving- I used to use instant rice but it just turns to mush the next day (& there’s useually some left over) but when I started using jasmine rice- if I wanted to have some the next day; I’d have to hide it! Ingredients needed: 1 cup Jasmine Rice/ 2 &1/2 cups Water/ a 1/2 cup Raisins/ 1 package of Vanilla Pudding/ 1 & 1/4 cups Milk/ 1 teaspoon Pumpkin Pie Spice or Cinnamon. (For juicy raisins follow this recipe; for chewy raisins; add them last.) Bring the 2&1/2 cups Water to a boil; add one cup Jasmine Rice & lower to simmer- after 10 minutes add 1/2 cup Raisins, and 1 teaspoon Pumpkin Pie Spice or Cinnamon. Let simmer an additional 5 minutes then remove from heat & let stand 15 minutes. Fluff with fork. Mix Pudding with Milk & add to Rice & place in fridge for 1 hour. Makes 4 Heaping servings, Enjoy!

  15. I don’t usually add Vanilla Pudding to my rice pudding which is similiar to Margie’s REceipe, but I will try it
next time I make it, as it sounds like it would make it creamier without having to add eggs to the rice pudding.
I also make my Bread Pudding the same way and will try adding the Vanilla Pudding to the Bread Pudding to exclude the eggs as well. Good for people who don’t like
eaTING TOO many eggs in their diet!!

  16. Yes, I love rice pudding too! A quick recipe: 1 pkg. white chocolate instant pudding mix and 1 c. cooked instant rice. Prepare pudding mix as directed and add the cool cooked rice. I always sprinkle with a little cinnamon. So easy and done in 10 minutes or less.

  18. I like rice pudding also. I find that cooked rice pudding is better than
baked rice pudding. I had made baked rice
pudding and it came out watery. The last time I made cooked rice pudding, I made it
with Carnation Fat Free Evaporated Milk.
It was really good. The recipe I made was
    from Sunmaid Raisins.

  19. Looks like so many of us have happy childhood memories. Only one ingredient missing from everyone’s recipe. Sitting by a fire on a cold winter’s night and eating the rice pudding. I will be making a large bowl of rice pudding for Christmas dinner. Along with chocolate bread pudding and some molasses based cookies for the side of the plate. By Christmas we are all so over pumpkin, turkey, etc. Time to change the menu.
For some strange reason, everytime I serve a comfort food dessert, my family always wants a tall glass of cold milk to go along with it.
